Endocannabinoids – CBD
The Science of Endocannabinoid System
With many states in America legalizing the use of medical marijuana and Cannabis growing, a number of studies and research were also reactivated regarding the science of endocannabinoid system and Cannabis.
Cannabis is a drug extracted from Indian hemp plants like Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica. It is popularly known as Marijuana but other terms include pot, hashish, bhang, hemp, kef, kif, charas, ganja, sinsemilla, dope, hash, grass, pot, blow, draw, stuff, Mary Jane, tea, weed, the weed, gold, green, mezz, skunkweed, skunk, reefer, rope, smoke, gage, boo, charge, jive, mootah, pod, wacky backy, locoweed; dagga, zol, and many more. It is also the most abused controlled drugs in the world. It contains Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC which is the mood-altering component and causes the “high”.
Encannabinoid System and Homeostasis
The human body has a biochemical communication system called Encanabbinoid System which works in regulating the body’s motor skills, our mood, as well as our recollection from our everyday experience. The primary function of this system is to maintain homeostasis or the ability to attain a stable internal environment despite the changes happening outside the body. Let us consider this analogy; if Batman and Batgirl are two very important personalities for Gotham City to survive, then Encannabinoid System is the same to Homeostasis.
When homeostasis is disturbed, then Encannabinoid System will perform its function to restore the balance and health of the body. Scientific researches were conducted with regards to Encannabinoid System and health.
However, if Encannabinoid System will fail to do its function, our immune system will weaken and we will be prone to illnesses and infections.
It was found out that the Encannabinoid receptors in our brain responds pharmacologically to Cannabis. So, how to trigger Encannabinoids in our brain? The Tetrahydrocannabinol acid when heated or exposed to oxygen is converted into THC which causes the toxicity in Cannabis. THC activates the Encannabinoid receptors and affects the brain by influencing pleasure, movement, memory, time perception and other mental and physical functions.
If ever, Cannabis will be medically proven to have positive effects on our ECS, it would mean getting high on the Encannabinoid System and better defense against diseases and infections. The THC, though it causes “high”, it can also help relieve symptoms caused by different neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, stroke, and even Alzheimer’s Disease. The Cannabidiol or CBD, another active component of Cannabis, on the other hand, has almost zero toxicity level. This means, it doesn’t give anyone the “high”. Studies were also conducted on the medicinal properties of CBD, and results shows potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-convulsive, and anti-psychotic properties. In fact, CBD works in concert with THC. It lessens that toxicity level of THC and increases is therapeutic effects.
